Great Books: Language Arts Intensive

Module 3

From the wilds of the Alaskan Tundra to inner city Flint, Michigan during the Great Depression, our last book in the series is Bud, Not Buddy. This Newbery Medal winner by Christopher Paul Curtis follows a homeless orphan through one of the toughest times in American history. You will continue to explore literary devices like irony, suspense, and figurative language while you build vocabulary and writing skills. Compare and contrast life in Flint, MI in 1930s to today. A copy of the book is required as reading 4-6 chapters a week will be homework necessary to successfully participate in class writing assignments.

Grades: 4-5

Stepping Stone to Middle School Writing: Module 2

We leave the Wizard of Earthsea to join Miyax in Alaska with Jean Craighead George’s classic, Julie of the Wolves. Expand your understanding of character, setting, plot, symbolism, and narrative arc that you explored in Module 1. Then move on to an understanding of how writers develop voice with literary devices such as flashback, figurative language, and point-of-view. Apply those devices to your written responses to the book while you build vocabulary and basic essay writing skills. A copy of the book is required as reading 4-6 chapters a week will be homework necessary to successfully participate in class writing assignments.

Stepping Stone to Middle School Writing: Module 1

Build reading comprehension while reinforcing writing skills. Using Oregon author Ursula Le Guin’s fantasy novel, A Wizard of Earthsea, you will reinforce your essay writing techniques. Build vocabulary and cultivate critical thinking skills while comparing the wizards and wizard school in Earthsea to other fantasy novels. Explore the shadow side of characters lead by pride and ambition. A copy of the book is required as reading 4-6 chapters a week will be homework necessary to successfully participate in class writing assignments.

This is a year round program with different modules.
